Attention: Prof. Peter Martin, FRSC, Interim Director

The University of Toronto is seeking a Director to lead the newly-endowed Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (www.di.utoronto.ca).  This is a joint appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics (www.astro.utoronto.ca) and the Dunlap Institute, with a target starting date of 1 July 2009.

The Dunlap Institute is a renewal of the David Dunlap memorial, an independent academic unit comparable yet complementary to the Department, the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (www.cita.utoronto.ca) hosted by the University, and cognate University departments in physical sciences and engineering.

The Director will work within this stimulating environment to enhance existing strengths in astronomy and astrophysics and to create and implement new programs to fulfill the broad goals of the Dunlap Institute which span research, education, and outreach.  The Institute anticipates initiating and embracing new instrumentation and observational campaigns, tightly coupled to theory, enabled by a strong postdoctoral program, skilled technical personnel, and laboratory facilities, and exploiting the advanced computational facilities in SciNet.  Inspiring new opportunities will be created for graduate and specialist undergraduate students.  The Institute will develop innovative means for channeling information on astronomy and astrophysics to the general public.

The successful candidate will have a PhD, an outstanding record of innovative scientific research, established abilities in teaching and research supervision, demonstrated leadership skills in defining and building programs and collaborations, and the energy, imagination, and vision to exploit this singular opportunity.   The Director will be expected to allocate approximately 50% of his/her time to the Institute.  T   he role as Director is for a five year term, once renewable.   The appointee will also be expected have his/her own active, externally funded, and internationally recognized research program and to contribute to the education and training of undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Toronto (www.utoronto.ca) offers the opportunity to teach, conduct research, and live in one of the most diverse cities in the world.  All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.  The University of Toronto is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.

Applicants should submit their curriculum vitae and bibliography, a statement of current research interests with future plans, and names and contact information for at least three referees by 1 January 2009 to:  Director Search, Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, University of Toronto, 50 St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 3H4, Canada or via e-mail to: didirector@di.utoronto.ca.  Applications will be considered until the position is filled.  Inquiries are welcomed via director@di.utoronto.ca.
